Joseph Patrick Mauer was born on April 19, 1983 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall high school. Joe was born a natural athlete and excelled in three different sports in high school. Lettering in basketball, football and baseball. In basketball, Mauer averaged more than 20 a game as a point guard for Cretin-Derham Hall. He was also named to the all star game during his final two years on Cretin-Derham’s basketball team. Mauer appeared in a Sports Illustrated issue as a “Face In The Crowd”.

A stand-out in baseball, Mauer struck out only once during his four-year high-school career, and hit .605 during his senior season. Mauer caught for the Team USA Junior National team from 1998 to 2000 and hit .595 during his final year on the team. He was voted best hitter at the World Junior Baseball Championships in Canada in 2000. In 2001, Mauer was voted the United States District V Player of the year. Mauer also had an extremely accomplished high-school football career.

During his senior season as the Raiders’ qauterback, Mauer completed 241 of 288 passes for 3,022 yards, 41 touchdowns and three interceptions. He finished his two-year career as a starter with 5,528 yards and 73 touchdowns, leading the Raiders to two consecutive Class 5A state championship game appearances and winning the title in 1999. Mauer threw seven touchdown passes in a playoff game against the Hopkins Royals. Mauer ultimately turned down a football scholarship from Florida State University to enter the Major League Baseball Draft.Mauer was selected by the Twins as the first overall pick of the 2001 draft.

Alicia has won many medals on vault, including a national and world title. I would say without a doubt, vault is Alicia's strong suit, but she is pretty strong all around and contributed to a team silver at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. I want to say Alicia is best known for being so outspoken in her interviews. She also definitely comes across to me as the Amanda Borden type teammate who is a little bit older than some of the other girls and super supportive of everyone. She is sort of like the voice of the team. Alicia is also recognized as an inspiration to anyone who started gymnastics a little later than most competitive girls; she began gymnastics at age 8 and began competing elite after only 7 years of training.

Currently: After a brief retirement post-2008 Olympics, Alicia came back from a shoulder surgery and has had quite a bit of success competing elite again. She recently won three medals at the 2011 CoverGirl Classic in Chicago and continues to train elite. Interesting Fact: Alicia attended Brown University and has considered transferring to Harvard to finish school. She plans to continue her education when she has the time. West Texas Tattoo Convention

The third annual West Texas Tattoo Convention this weekend at the McNease Convention Center.

Artists include Richard Stell, Oliver Peck, Tony Hundahl, Daniel Abrigo, Matt Arriola, Mike Wilson and others from Los Angeles, New York, Austin and even Rome. Tickets at the door are $18.50 for a daily pass and $30 for a weekend pass.

The convention lasts from 2 to 11 p.m. today, noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The Deadhorse will host an after-party each night downtown at 210 S. Chadbourne St.

More than 50 booths will be stuffed full of jewelry, artwork, T-shirts, toys and other tattoo-themed merchandise. Patrons with tattoos can enter contests in different categories to strut their ink.
